PDC Super Series 2 produced some of the best Players Championship averages in recent years during the recent four days of darts from the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. The overall event averages again reached their highest bracket. The evidence is mounting that whilst the highest standards in professional darts are stable, the depth and consistency level is increasing year-on-year.
The second four-event block of Players Championship events saw Brendan Dolan, Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton, and Peter Wright claim victories at the Marshall Arena.
The stats from Players Championship events have been recorded since 2018 via the DartConnect system, the averages across PDC Super Series 2 saw a number of notable results when compared with the previous events since that time.
During Players Championship 8 some thirty-six matches were won with an average of over 100 while three out of the four champions recorded averages inside the top ten for Players Championship winners over the last two years, with Wright (102.90), Price (102.89), and Dolan (102.19) all producing top echelon results.
The overall standard is also improving with the higher total averages becoming more regular. Three of last week’s events made the top ten for the overall tournament average, Players Championship 3 from the first Super Series of 2021 also made the list
Players Championship 5 produced the highest, matching PC3 with a 93.27 overall event average, with Players Championship 8 (93.24) and Players Championship 6 (92.71).
The latest four-event PDC Super Series 2 witnessed three nine-darters, with Wolverhampton’s Wayne Jones and Richie Edhouse producing perfect legs in Players Championship 5 and Mickey Mansell matching them in Players Championship 8, taking the 2021 total to 12.
Whilst the overall averages show many of the biggest names at or near the top, they also offer a clue into why players such as Jose de Sousa (93.03) and Nathan Aspinall (93.16) have risen so strongly. Both have set high bars within the last couple of years and it’s clear that their consistency over a full event has assisted their rise into the elite of the game.
