On June 29, Canadian darts legend John Part celebrated his 60th birthday, capping a remarkable career that has helped shape the modern game. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players to emerge from outside the United Kingdom, Part’s achievements on the oche have inspired generations across North America and beyond.

Born in Toronto in 1966, Part took up darts relatively late after receiving a dartboard as a Christmas gift in 1987. Within just a few years, he had risen to the sport’s elite. His breakthrough came in 1994 when he stunned the darts world by winning the BDO World Championship, defeating Bobby George in the final.

The victory made him the first player from outside the UK to lift the famous Lakeside title and established him as a genuine global force.
After switching to the PDC in 1997, Part achieved even greater success. His finest moment arguably came in 2003, when he defeated the seemingly unbeatable Phil Taylor 7-6 in a classic PDC World Championship final. It was the only time between 1995 and 2007 that Taylor failed to win the title, underscoring the magnitude of Part’s triumph.

Affectionately known as “Darth Maple” — a nod to both his love of Star Wars and the maple leaf on the Canadian flag — Part became instantly recognisable thanks to his walk-on music, “The Imperial March,” Darth Vader’s famous theme. The combination perfectly suited his calm, composed demeanour and made him one of the most memorable figures in the sport.

Five years later, he added a third world crown by defeating Kirk Shepherd 7-2 in the 2008 final at Alexandra Palace, cementing his place among the sport’s all-time greats. He remains the only player from outside Europe to have won the PDC World Championship.
His trophy cabinet also includes the 2006 Las Vegas Desert Classic, while he reached the finals of the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, and UK Open, proving his consistency across every major tournament.

After Elite Competitive Darts
Since stepping back from full-time competition, Part has become one of the sport’s most respected broadcasters. His insightful analysis, calm delivery, and ability to explain the technical and mental sides of the game have made him a favourite with viewers during major television coverage.

Whether breaking down a player’s throw, offering historical context, or predicting tactical decisions, Part brings the authority of a three-time world champion while remaining engaging and approachable.
At 60, John Part’s legacy extends far beyond his titles. He helped put Canadian darts on the world map, inspired countless players to believe they could compete with the very best, and has seamlessly transitioned into one of the finest pundits in the sport.
Few figures have contributed as much to darts both on and off the stage, making “Darth Maple” a true icon of the game.
