Jack of All Trades: Aldridge Masters MODUS Week 10

Diamond Draws Competitions

Saturday night at the MODUS Super Series is rarely dull, and the Week 10 showpiece event was no exception, with Jack Aldridge producing a stellar display to lift the weekly title. The Englishman, who sits 15th in the Challenge Tour rankings, batted away fierce competition from a lineup packed with quality.

The groups began with Lee Evans getting the better of Aldridge in Group One (4-2), kicking off proceedings with a 158 checkout to win the match. Though this early salvo was not enough for Evans who lost out to Jim McEwan (4-1) and didn’t make the semis.

After this win and a narrow loss (4-3) to Aldridge, McEwan topped the group with Aldridge picking up the second spot.

Over in Group Two, the outsider to win the night topped his group, as Jamie Lewis subjected Kaya Baysal to just his second loss of the week (4-1). Lewis was joined by Baysal in the top two, at the expense of fellow young gun Jamai Van Den Herik as the 16-year-old reached the semis on debut.

As for the semi finals, levels did not drop as two brilliant contests were played out. Baysal produced a fine display to edge past McEwan and storm into his first weekly final, bidding to become the youngest ever weekly champion.

On the other side of the draw, Aldridge put Jamie Lewis to the sword (4-2) producing 130 and 160 checkouts to meet Baysal in the final. The final saw two of the week’s inform players battle it out for glory. Baysal had been one of the standouts from a week where talent was not few and far between, but Aldridge answered as to why he was favourite.

Seeing off Baysal with an average of 98 in a match that featured three 180s, Aldridge’s scoring power was able to afford him chances at the outer ring, on which he had a 40% success rate. Jack secured his spot in Champions Week in style.

Aldridge’s success was largely built on his ability to bounce back from adversity when the spotlight was on him. After losing his first match of the night, he didn’t let this affect him and played a fantastic run to the win.

The MODUS Super series once again lived up to its reputation as one of darts’ most captivating competitions. A high calibre field culminated in another compelling Finals Night and a deserved conclusion to an outstanding week of action.
