Beginner dart sets tend to have a familiar ceiling. Decent tungsten barrel darts used to mean one shape, one grip and a fixed point you’re stuck with until it bends. Red Dragon’s new Sable range is pitched at exactly that price bracket, but it doesn’t play by those rules.
For £49.99, Sable ships with three distinct barrel profiles, Winmau’s Switch Point interchangeable point system and Nitro Flite integrated flights as standard. That’s a spec sheet that you wouldn’t be surprised to see on a high-range player set eighteen months ago, let alone one aimed at newcomers and returning players.

But the more you analyse this new value-for-money range, the more you realise meets the eye.
Three barrels, one range.
Rather than settling on one single shape, Red Dragon has built Sable around three profiles designed for different grips:
- Sable 01 Parallel – A true straight barrel for players who grip font-to-back and want consistency along the full length of the dart. Available in 21g, 22g, 23g and 24g.
- Sable 02 Torpedo – Weight carried towards the front for a forward-grip thrower who favours a confident, weighted release. Available in 23g, 24g and 25g.
- Sable 03 Bomb – A bulbous mid-section with a controlled taper for players who want a defined grip section and a settled feel in the hand. Available in 22g, 24g and 26g.
That range of profiles and weights with nine combinations in total, means a newcomer isn’t just buying a dart, they’re effectively being handed a starting point for working out what actually suits their throw, without having to buy three separate sets to find out.
Grip and finish
Each barrel is 90% tungsten, finished in black onyx PVD with silver accents, and built around a multi-zone grip that layers radial, micro and V-grooves along its length. The idea is clear reference points for finger placement rather than one aggressive knurl pattern throughout, giving controlled feedback and a repeatable release without demanding the fine-tuning a more textured barrel might reward. Early reviews have singled out the grip and machining a standout for the price.

Switch Point as standard
The bigger shift is what’s built into the end of the barrel. All three Sable profiles come fitted with Switch Point technology, a threaded system that lets players swap out a bent or blunted point in seconds, or even just to try a different length or grip pattern. It isn’t a closed system either. Switch Point is compatible with rival point systems too, so players aren’t restricted to buying replacement points from one source. This also allows players to make incremental changes to their setups without altering anything drastically or having to use a traditional repointing system. After all, it’s the smallest changes that can have the biggest impact.
Until recently, that kind of interchangeable-tip setup was something you’d only find limited to certain brands on tour-spec darts costing two or three times as much. Folding it into a £50 range, alongside integrated Nitro Flite systems that are usually sold separately makes Sable a noticeably different proposition to the beginner sets that have traditionally occupied this price point.
Why it matters
None of these features are new in isolation. We’ve seen the Nodor Group [Red Dragon and Winmau] slowly roll out their Switch Point technology across many of the player barrels you see regularly on the big screen. What’s notable is seeing barrel choice, swappable points and integrated flights bundled together at a price that’s traditionally bought a single-shaped barrel and a set of loose flights and stems.
