On the Oche: Darts World 577

Red Dragon Darts

Whether it’s a ‘rowdy rumble’ at the palace, a traditional New Year at the Lakeside or a nostalgic trip to the Circus (Tavern) that’s the highlight of your darting festivities the next few weeks will have it all!

In less than two years darts has gone from being reduced to one senior World Championship, even that being behind closed doors, to the fierce anticipation that now surrounds the four upcoming tournaments.

The annual PDC centerpiece will soon kick-off. 2022’s event looks more open than ever before. At least three recent champions appear to be hitting form at just the right time. Gerwyn Price reclaimed the Grand Slam in fine style, Peter Wright is having another spectacular, trophy-laden, year and Michael Van Gerwen is displaying an upturn in both form and fighting talk.

The WDF has risen like Lazarus and the Lakeside renewal of their World Championship can only be good for our game. Wayne Warren will finally get to defend his title on the board and be introduced properly live and on TV. The Women’s event is likely to garner far greater attention than ever before and several are capable of springing a surprise and claiming the trophy and increased prize money.

As we move into 2022 The World Seniors will debut and many of those who contributed to making the global phenomenon, that is darts, will strut their stuff once more. Phil Taylor’s return may grab the headlines but the field is full of star names, many of whom will fancy stealing his thunder!

This issue of Darts World pays tribute to ‘The Power of 6’ . We have spoken to World Champions from every decade of the professional championships and paid tribute to their contributions. So whether you’re a Lowe or Deller fan, a Taylor/Priestly aficionado, or a relative newcomer who loves today’s characters, there is something for you all from page 29 onward.

2022 looks like a momentous year for darts at all levels. Alongside the major TV events, the first UKDA National League will be won, the WDF will host a full calendar, MAD’s innovative new system will make further progress and the PDC’s affiliated tours are set to expand once again. The full tour offered to the Women’s game may well prove a tipping point.

The Darts World team wishes you and yours a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic tungsten-filled new year!
