High Flying Hughes Claims Maiden Win

Red Dragon Darts

Jamie Hughes finally got over the line on the Alexandra Palace stage, moving through to the 2nd Round after a 3-1 victory over Seniors Major winner David Cameron on Night 2.

The Englishman opened the match with two straight holds to send the first set into a deciding last leg. The Red Dragon player hit a 65 checkout to take the set against the darts, putting himself in a promising position in the opening tungsten tussle of the evening session.

The 2nd set also went to a last leg decider with both players once again holding their initiatives in North London, with Yozza finishing 68 in the fourth leg. This time Excalibur found a break to pinch the second set, levelling the contest at 1-1 going into the second break.

Hughes pushed on knowing he needed to get an opening win on on the world stage, breaking throw twice to move a set away from victory including an 89 checkout in the third leg.

The proud Black Country native won the last set without reply from Cameron as he booked his place in the Last 64, finally tasting success at Alexandra Palace in a positive showing from the man from the West Country.

Jamie moves through to face German Darts Open champion Krzysztof Ratajski in the next round, with a place in the Last 32 up for grabs after the Christmas period.

Elsewhere, Dave Chisnall opened his campaign with a 3-1 victory over Cameron Menzies, whilst American World Cup representative Jules van Dongen fell to a 3-1 defeat against Australian Darren Penhall.
