Talking Points: Transfixed?

Diamond Draws Competitions

A multitude of darts discussions have sprung up during the first half of 2025, sadly, few are original.

The trans debate has been pushed to the fore again by a UK Supreme Court ruling. It seems pretty clear to any fair minded, legally literate, party that this will require adjustments and the idea of any darts organisation simply carrying on regardless will end as soon as the first brave folk take legal action.

The age-old debate about revamping the ranking structure, in response to the first £1 million winners prize being announced for Ally Pally, has once more reared its head. The thing is, no one has suggested a fully illustrated alternative that has no anomalies or unintended effects that would soon be subject to the same debate! A previous points based system was also shown to be unsatisfactory.

Raymond Van Barneveld seems to have lit a fire under some with his acceptance of an invitation to play the World Senior Darts Champion of Champions event at the end of this month. Some are seeing this as a wedge to allow lower ranked players to play events outside the PDC system to maximise their earning power.

While this seems decent at face value the reverse side of the coin should also be noted. Players outside the PDC would have their opportunities reduced and less chance to earn and gain the stage, broadcast and audience experiences that can make all the difference if and when they reach the top level. Dan Dawson’s comments about the UK Open losing its uniqueness are a clue as to what can happen.

The bold efforts of new organisations have provided new pathways for players and new effective, independent feeder systems for the elite game. We should be careful to nurture them.

Professional darts is a competitive, merit based environment and needs to remain so in order to progress. While the efforts to reward lower ranked and early losing players have much to recommend them there are limits to how level you can level the playing field while still leaving the gate open to new players.
