In recognition of National Numeracy Day on Wednesday 20th May, newly commissioned research has illuminated a compelling shift in parental attitudes towards the educational utility of sport, and darts, with an overwhelming proportion of UK parents now believing that participation in sporting activities can serve as a meaningful catalyst for the enhancement of numeracy proficiency among school-age children.
The study, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Winmau, the globally renowned darts manufacturer, surveyed 2,002 parents across the United Kingdom and uncovered a remarkably strong consensus surrounding the relationship between sport and mathematical development.
DARTS DOING GOOD: DartsWorld’s Dedicated Area For Darts Social and Charity Activity
Among the most striking revelations was the elevated perception of darts as an educationally advantageous discipline. Despite rarely featuring within conventional school curriculums, darts was identified by 62% of respondents as one of the most effective sports for strengthening numeracy skills – surpassing several long-established school activities in the process. Cue sports also performed impressively, with snooker and pool selected by 45% of parents, further reinforcing the belief that precision-based activities requiring rapid calculation and strategic cognition may possess substantial pedagogical value.

More traditional sporting pursuits also achieved considerable recognition within the findings. Football was selected by 52% of respondents, while tennis received 44%. Cricket and basketball each secured 36%, demonstrating that parents broadly acknowledge the educational ramifications of sport beyond its obvious physical and recreational benefits.
Darts For Schools Receives Huge Parental Support
Perhaps most significantly, 81% of those surveyed expressed support for the inclusion of darts within the educational curriculum, believing that its introduction could materially improve their child’s mathematical capabilities. The findings therefore raise important questions surrounding the future composition of physical education and whether cognitively intensive, non-traditional sports warrant more serious academic consideration.
