Smith Secures Third Pro Tour Title of 2026

Diamond Draws Competitions

On-song Ross Smith secured his third PDC Pro Tour darts triumph of the current campaign on Thursday afternoon, adding another Players Championship title to his ever-expanding collection courtesy of a commanding victory over William O’Connor in the Milton Keynes showpiece.

Having opened his 2026 account with success against Chris Dobey in Leicester, before subsequently capturing the International Darts Open to double his seasonal tally, Smith has now equalled the most prolific campaign of his career. Significantly, with a substantial portion of the calendar still remaining, the prospect of surpassing that benchmark appears increasingly plausible.

The Dover thrower’s route to the latter stages was largely devoid of adversity. Smith began by dispatching Cor Dekker before producing a comprehensive whitewash against German, Dominik Gruellich. Further victories over Ian White, Cristo Reyes and Andy Boulton followed in similarly authoritative fashion, conceding a mere five legs across those encounters and underlining the imperious nature of his form.

His sternest examination arrived in the semi-finals, where teenager Henry Coates produced a display of immense composure and maturity. The nineteen-year-old stretched the contest to a deciding leg and came agonisingly close to reaching his maiden Players Championship final, only to squander three match darts. Such infinitesimal margins often determine success and failure at the highest level, and Smith ruthlessly seized upon the reprieve to progress to the last match of the latest Arena MK double-header.

Awaiting the Englishman was William O’Connor, who has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent months. The Irish arrow-smith negotiated victories over Victor Tingstrom and Shane McGuirk before producing a devastating display against Martin Schindler, preventing the German World Cup captain from registering a single leg.

Thereafter, O’Connor demonstrated both resilience and consistency, recording successive 6-4 victories over the in-form Wessel Nijman and a rejuvenated Dave Chisnall. He then delivered an emphatic triumph against Richard Veenstra to book his place in the final.

And in the showpiece event, it was Smith who assumed control following the early exchanges. Establishing a commanding 4-2 advantage, the former European Champion dictated proceedings with his customary heavy scoring. Although O’Connor remained resolute and refused to capitulate, opportunities to break his opponent’s throw proved exceedingly scarce.

Relentlessly peppering the treble twenty bed with remarkable precision, Smith maintained his superiority throughout the closing stages. A magnificent average of 107 ultimately propelled the Englishman to his tenth career Players Championship title, further reinforcing his credentials as one of the circuit’s most formidable and prolific performers.
