The Darts World Years 1976 – Issue 45: Nerves

Diamond Draws Competitions

Any trip the DartsWorld archive leaves you almost chuckling aloud at how little our game has changed. Regardless of all the booms, media attention and technological advances many issue remain for mere mortal players. Just check out this article* from August 1976 on coping with that age old adversary nerves:

The greatest obstacle sportsmen in their quest for fame, glory and riches of about it, darts is no exception. In fact, the need for concentration over the accuracy of a darts throw makes it a game susceptible to nerves.

And for all the time, money and skill that darts equipment manufacturers in developing the best can provide for the game they have yet to come up with to conquer this biggest failing of all.

But why should anyone suffer particularly at the big match occasion with a large crowd deal depending on the thrower, nerves are basically doing badly.

THE EVOLUTION OF DARTS: DartsWorld’s Dedicated Legacy Area

A restoration of the original 1976 article.

The remedy is CONFIDENCE. Success science (it’s always that much more difficult to defeat a well) and confidence breeds success.

Players have developed their own TRANQUILISERS (be careful if taken with alcohol); DRINK (to go “over the top”); HYPNOTISM (careful not to become …); YOGA (difficult to throw from a cross-legged).

Take your own choice; but just remember it’s all in the mind.

This is what ace darts professional Eric Bristow has to say about it: “You’re just not natural if you get nervous on your first game. But if you concentrate doubles and trebles seem to magnify and then you feel like you can’t miss them.”
