The forty fifth issue of Darts World Magazine saw an already familiar face return to our August 1976 pages as John Lowe captured the first British Pentathlon title. The list of talent to finish in the top section is quite impressive. Here is how we reported it:

THERE had never been a darts match quite like the British Pentathlon – but that won’t stop the Kent Darts Organisation from trying to make it an annual event!
Everyone who gathered at The Royal Star Hotel, Maidstone, agreed that it was a fascinating darts occasion.
And for John Lowe of Derbyshire, who emerged the winner there was a £1,000 cheque. Next three players shared another £1,000.The 20 players (each paying £100 entry fee) played 24 games, including a variety of 501, 1001, 2001, shanghai, halve-it and round-the-board-on-doubles. Points were awarded for proficiency.

After three games John went into the lead which he never lost, though Leighton Rees drew level for a while six games from the end.
King of the doubles was George Simmons; Halve-it was won by Leighton Rees and Cliff Lazarenko won the shanghai.
Top positions (and points) were: John Lowe (Derbys) 293; Leighton Rees (Wales) 285; Alan Glazier (London) 269; Tony Brown (Kent) 267; George Simmons (Kent) 262; Peter Chapman (Oxon) 254; Cliff Lazarenko (Hants) 252.
