Harry Lane has fired himself into contention for a Lakeside debut, after he dispatched of Graham Usher 6-1 to win the British Classic Open title with relative ease at Bridlington Spa.
Finishes of 68, 74 and a brilliant 148 punctuated the win, Lane’s second WDF ranking title, and left Usher with a single leg to show for his evening. It follows his England National Singles title that he picked up earlier this year.
It ended Usher’s shot at a Bridlington double. “The Gambler” had been the best scorer of the quarters, averaging 91 to beat Pat Scurfield. He was pushed all the way by Carl Wilkinson in the last four, edging a last leg decider 5-4 but there was no repeat of that escape act here.
He has little time to dwell on the defeat as he now waits to face Harrison Leigh in the British Open final, the last game of the evening.
Lane’s own route included a close escape. He needed a deciding leg to see off Wales’ Mark Graham in the quarters, with Graham averaging more than three points more than him.
It was far more assured in the semis, beating Benjamin Smith 5-2 without needing that deciding leg and was even more dominant in the final, earning himself the £1,500 top prize.
