NEILS Zonneveld etched his name into the history books on Sunday night in Maastricht, claiming a first PDC ranking title with an 8-5 victory over Danny Noppert in an all-Dutch final.

The 2026 Elten Safety Shoes Dutch Darts Championship played out In front of a 5,000-strong home crowd at the MECC as the new world number 28 became the first Dutch champion of the event in its sixth staging and pocketed the £35,000 top prize.

Zonneveld had entered the weekend as the highest-ranked player yet to win a ranking title. Trailing 2-0 early in the final, Zonneveld reeled off five consecutive legs to seize control. Noppert responded with an 89 checkout on the bull to close the gap to 5-4, only for Zonneveld to answer with a pivotal 157 outshot.

After missing a match dart that allowed Noppert to trail 7-5, the 28-year-old produced a composed break of throw to seal the title.

“It’s still a dream, I can’t believe it!” Zonneveld said afterwards. “I think the final was not that good, but we had a long day behind us. All respect to Danny – I think he will win many more. The 157 was a really important shot, because I was getting nervous! It was my first final, so I can’t blame myself. I have to enjoy this moment… It’s just a dream come true.”

The win also confirmed Zonneveld’s debut at next month’s Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts. For Noppert it was a fifth successive European Tour final defeat, with a maiden title still proving elusive. The former UK Open champion had produced a career-best 113.42 average to dismantle Luke Woodhouse in the quarter-finals and then edged Gian van Veen 7-5 in a high-quality semi-final.

“He is a deserved winner,” Noppert conceded. “I had a chance for my first European Tour title, but he deserved it. I always have positive feelings. I always believe in myself and trust in myself.”

Zonneveld’s path to glory included a 6-5 win over Krzysztof Ratajski, a career-first victory against Gerwyn Price, a last-leg triumph over Wessel Nijman (averaging over 102), and a 7-4 semi-final success against Stephen Bunting.

Van Veen had enjoyed a record-breaking weekend on home soil, highlighted by his 120.24 average whitewash of Sebastian Bialecki on Saturday, before falling to Noppert in the last four.

Bunting, meanwhile, ensured a fifth consecutive European Championship appearance with his run to the semi-finals after starting the weekend outside the provisional qualification places.
