Birmingham Premier League Sees the Race For The O2 Hotting Up

Diamond Draws Competitions

With only a couple of nights remaining in the 2026 Premier League before the final top four head to the O2 in pursuit of ultimate darts glory, things are becoming extremely interesting.

Following the failures of Gerwyn Price, Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen to collect points in Leeds, it handed Luke Humphries the opportunity to leap into those crucial play-off spots – a position he would love nothing more than to retain for another fortnight.

For some, their destinies are already decided. For the rest, however, it could go right down to the wire. With Birmingham serving as the penultimate stop before the league phase concludes in Sheffield, who will hold their nerve and secure qualification?

DartsWorld takes a closer look at the fortunes of all eight protagonists ahead of a crucial trip to the West Midlands.

1st: LUKE LITTLER

Luke Littler is absolutely fine. The Nuke secured his place in London quite some time ago. Holding a five-point cushion at the top of the table, the only remaining question is whether he arrives at the capital still sitting at the summit, or in the only other position he can now realistically finish – second.

The World Champion faces Clayton in Birmingham and, should he win that quarter-final, first place will officially be guaranteed.

2nd: JONNY CLAYTON

Like Littler, Jonny Clayton is O2-bound. And, similarly, it is now simply a case of whether The Ferret heads there as league leader or runner-up. If he loses his quarter-final on Thursday, that finishing position will effectively be set in stone.

3rd: GERWYN PRICE

The equation is slightly simpler for Price. Win the entire night in Birmingham and the Welshman is safe. Reaching the final could also prove sufficient, depending on how results unfold elsewhere.

There is even a possibility The Iceman walks onto the stage next Thursday already knowing his place on Finals Night is secure.

4th: LUKE HUMPHRIES

The reigning Premier League champion finally forced his way back into the top four in Leeds, but there is still work to be done.

Humphries will undoubtedly want another deep run in Birmingham and will probably be hoping Price does him a favour by increasing the gap to Van Gerwen in fifth place. Although, naturally, the Welshman has ambitions of his own.

5th: MICHAEL VAN GERWEN

It is shaping up to be a late, late show for Van Gerwen if he still harbours ambitions of another Premier League crown.

Following his opening-round defeat in Leeds, Mighty Mike slipped outside the qualification places. Things remain very much in the Dutchman’s own hands, but if Humphries were to defeat Price in the Birmingham final, MVG would be eliminated.

That is only one possible scenario, but sitting just a solitary point outside the cut-off line, Van Gerwen will desperately want to avoid that gap widening heading into Sheffield.

6th: GIAN VAN VEEN

The reigning European Champion could see his hopes ended after Thursday night if a couple of results go against him. Should Van Veen lose his quarter-final against Rock, he would then face an anxious wait to discover whether a Sheffield rescue mission remained possible. Already three points adrift of the play-off spots, if that gap were to stretch to six, it would effectively be game over. For Gian, the message is simple – try to win both remaining nights and qualification should take care of itself.

7th: STEPHEN BUNTING

For the former Lakeside Champion, the first objective is crystal clear – beat Humphries in the opening quarter-final. Fail in that task and the dream is over. Mathematically, Bunting can still qualify, but realistically he would need to win both Birmingham and Sheffield while also relying on favourable results elsewhere. It is asking an awful lot, but at least The Bullet still has a seat at the table – albeit a very creaky one that looks perilously close to collapsing.

8th: JOSH ROCK

While Josh Rock has significantly improved after a slow start, he can no longer make the play-offs. What Rocky can still achieve, however, is avoiding the wooden spoon.

To stand any realistic chance of doing so, the Northern Irish ace must defeat Van Veen in his opening match next week. Fail there and the maximum points total he could reach would only match Stephen Bunting’s current tally. Given The Bullet’s superior leg difference, even winning the nightly title in Sheffield would not be enough.
