Player Championship Extra: Menzies Clings On and Merkx’s Milestone

Diamond Draws Competitions

Scotland’s newest World Cup representative, Cameron Menzies, continues to cling precariously to the final qualification berth for the World Matchplay despite suffering a first-round elimination – remarkably his fifth consecutive opening-round exit – during the concluding Players Championship double-header in Wigan.

Elsewhere, Adam Leek enjoyed his most auspicious run of the campaign. The Australian, having endured disappointment at the World Cup, responded admirably by progressing to the last 16 before narrowly missing out on a maiden quarter-final appearance, eventually succumbing to Gian van Veen in Robin Park.

Adam (above) has picked up prize money, and thus ranking points, in 8 events so far this season and the £5,500 from this weeks events will see a sharp rise in his rankings and stimulate his hopes for a major appearance.

Tommy Morris likewise continued his highly encouraging emergence. The Dorset ace has capitalised impressively upon his sporadic call-up opportunities on the ProTour. And after an almost ever-present throughout the campaign, advanced on this occasion to the quarter-finals – his best to date – before his challenge was extinguished by multiple PDC title winner Stephen Bunting.

Merkx’s Milestone – German Darts Star Breaks Last 16 Hoodoo

There was also a notable milestone for Alexander Merkx. Having previously reached the last 16 on three occasions this season, the Dutchman surpassed that benchmark with a maiden quarter-final appearance. However, his hopes of progressing further were thwarted by Rob Cross, with Voltage prevailing 6-4 to deny Merkx a place in the semi-finals. Cross also brought to an end a fine run from new Tour card holder when he halted David Sharp in the last 16.
