Derek Coulson’s remarkable renaissance and history making perfection have been two of the more compelling narratives of the 2026 season. Having spent several years away from competing regularly at the highest level, the Welshman has emerged as one of the standout performers outside the professional ranks at the age of 58.
DC’s exploits, on the Challenge Tour and MODUS Super Series, serve as tangible evidence that his game has undergone a significant transformation.
The former World Seniors Championship semi-finalist has enjoyed a succession of encouraging performances this year and returned to the Challenge Tour with renewed conviction. Such confidence was not misplaced. Bang On Target recently caught up with Coulson ahead of the Pro Tour double-header in Wigan and began asking was he surprised with his start to the current campaign:
“No. With the work I’d put in to my game over the last 12-18 months I felt I’d get chances at titles this year.”
Those opportunities have indeed arrived, with Coulson establishing himself amongst the leading figures on the secondary circuit whilst simultaneously earning numerous call-ups to Players Championship events. Yet perhaps his most extraordinary accomplishment came away from the PDC structure, where he etched his name into darts history at the MODUS Super Series.

Across an exceptional week of competition, the Welshman produced a sequence of performances that culminated in a new benchmark being established in Group A. Having begun the campaign strongly, the magnitude of what he was achieving gradually became apparent.
“I knew the current record was 14 wins in Group A. Obviously at the start of the week it’s about winning as many games to be in contention come Wednesday. But after Tuesday and being 10 from 10, it then starts to become a reality. It’s huge for me, so many cracking players holding records at MODUS, to be one of them is an honour.”
By the conclusion of proceedings, Coulson had completed an undefeated Group A campaign, securing his place amongst the competition’s most distinguished record holders. To go through the card at such a demanding event and set a benchmark – 19 wins from 19 matches – that can never be bettered is surely a rebuttal to the ‘it’s a youngsters game now’ narrative that is visible across the darts ecosphere.

Whether promotion arrives this season or not, the Welshman remains philosophical.
“If my game is still in a good place at the end of the year, I’ll defo be back at Q-School if I don’t finish top two on the Challenge Tour. Just love playing darts.”
Judging by the standards he has produced throughout 2026, few would bet against Derek Coulson continuing his remarkable ascent even as he heads toward a seventh decade.
