WINNING a MODUS Super Series Weekly league is genuinely satisfying. The new stage-centred venue is a fantastic space to play in and is proving popular with players, media teams, sponsors, and supporters alike.
On a personal note, the regular match practice and the sheer volume of legs and matches have proven a hugely positive addition to my professional timetable. I remember my team being delighted when I was first asked to play. A week at the MSS is the equivalent of a month’s worth of coaching and practice sessions.
Funnily enough, I did not play as well this week as I have at times in the past. The difference though was that I seemed to find a deeper focus, perhaps inspired by the stage and cameras etc? This ensured that the odd games I might have let slip before did not go begging.
Playing a former World and current Dutch Open Champion, in the person of Jelle Klaasen, every day and then in the overall semi-final acts as a good yardstick of where you are. Every game between Jelle and I was 4-3 or 3-4 and, on this occasion, I claimed the majority and the most important ones.
The focus will soon switch to Q School and preparations for 2023. Ironically should I secure a Pro Tour Card I will be unable to play the Champions Week for which I just qualified! But having worked very hard for more than five years to be able to rebuild my career, the pursuit of the top table is ongoing!
The festive season, and the lead-up to it, is always busy and often exciting. I am delighted to be back in the Northeast for some exhibitions before Christmas, although an all expenses paid trip to Hong Kong would have been almost as welcome, ah well, least said soonest mended!
Back in 2009, I made the cover of Darts World for an issue that must have been about this time of year. I was coming off the back of a trio of titles, including the Championship League of Darts, and had just defeated a certain MVG for a Players Championship win in Irvine in Scotland.
I shall be doing my best to make a second appearance during their 50th-anniversary celebrations. In the meanwhile, I wish you all a fantastic Christmas and hope to see you for a bounty year in 2023
