Swiss Ace Thomas Junghans withstood a maximum barrage from James Beeton to reach the last 16 as three more seeded players fell as the 2024 WDF World Championships continued at Lakeside
on Tuesday afternoon.
‘TJ’ (main image) withstood eight 180s from the English youngster, coming from 1-0 and 2-1 down to reach the Last 16 for the second successive year. The Swiss opened the match with a 104 finish but lost the first set, Beeton winning three successive legs in 14, 16 and 15 darts. The second set was much more smooth sailing for Junghans, who pinned finishes of 87 and 80 to win it 3-0.
Set three went the way of Beeton, the young Englishman taking out 90 in two darts to nick it 3-2, before Junghans levelled up the score by taking the fourth set 3-1. ‘TJ’ hit a 144 finish in the fourth set and hit another big checkout in the final set, this time a 117,as he wrapped up the fifth 3-0 and ran out a 3-2 winner with an 85.4 average.
Bottenberg Downs Hogarth
Dutch Open champion Jarno Bottenberg produced another impressive display to wrap up the afternoon’s session, averaging 89.11 in a 3-1 victory over Ryan Hogarth. ‘Bottie’ continued his good form from his win over Matthew Edgar, taking out 108 in the opening before producing an 18-dart hold to go 2-0 up in the first set.Hogarth found another level though to take the opener, getting on the board with a 13-darter before producing successive finishes of 114 and 111.
Bottenberg levelled things up going into the break, winning the second set 3-0 before taking the third set 3-1 with a pair of 16-darters. Frustration began to set in for the 15th seed Hogarth, with Bottenberg winning three legs on the seal the fourth set and a 3-1 victory. He’ll be back in action on Thursday evening against Jimmy van Schie or Bjorn Lejon.
Wilkinson Punishes Pratnemer
Carl Wilkinson picked up where he left off in his opening game with Jacob Taylor, defeating eighth seed Benjamin Pratnemer 3-0. The first set went all the way, with Wilkinson making the most of winning the bull by holding throw in the final leg with double four. Pratnemer’s finishing was a real problem though, finishing with a record of just 3/33 on the outer ring. Wilkinson was much more efficient, winning the second set 3-1 before sealing the clean sheet by winning the third set 3-0.
Cisarova Cruises On
Jitka Cisarova continues to make darting history for the Czech Republic here at Lakeside, eliminating Desi Mercer 2–0 to reach the Women’s quarter-finals. Mercer achieved something that Anca Zijlstra didn’t against Cisarova in round one, and that was win a leg, but after the Kiwi pinned 96, she didn’t get another one on the board. Cisarova took the first set 3-1 and then the second 3-0 to reach the last eight, where she’ll face the winner of tonight’s clash between Beau Greaves and Kirsi Viinikainen.
