Whilst Hawkeye Kevin Doets securing a maiden PDC Pro Tour title was undoubtedly the headline-grabbing narrative to emerge from the opening Players Championship double-header in Germany, there were plenty of other notable and intriguing developments unfolding elsewhere.
DARTS PLAYER MERCHANDISE AND COLLECTABLES AT OUR DARTSWORLD STORE!
Firstly, given that a remarkable sixteen Challenge Tour players received call-ups, it feels only right to begin there. Among that contingent were several debutants, not least 17-year-old Ben Townley, who seized his opportunity following Ryan Joyce’s last-minute withdrawal.
Of that group, it was the ever-reliable Derek Coulson who produced the deepest run, eventually bowing out at the last 16 stage.

The talented Welshman compiled a series of valuable and hard-earned victories over Dominik Gruellich, Karel Sedlacek and William O’Connor before being halted by Lithuania’s Darius Labanauskas.
The highest average of the afternoon belonged to Andrew Gilding, who posted a staggering 118.66 in a board final whitewash former PDC Masters champion Joe Cullen.
And just to underline that monstrous averages do not always guarantee success; a pair of Dutchmen can attest to that cruel reality. Both Richard Veenstra and Jermaine Wattimena soared beyond the 107 mark, yet still succumbed to Ritchie Edhouse and Kevin Doets respectively. That said, both victors themselves operated comfortably above the ton in equally high-quality encounters.
Despite departing the Halle 39 arena crestfallen after his final defeat, Luke Woodhouse can take considerable encouragement from an excellent day’s work. It marked yet another agonising near miss for the Harrow man, who has now come close on three occasions – previously in 2023 at this very venue and last year at the Swiss Darts Trophy where Stephen Bunting dashed his dreams of a piece of European silverware.
Returns and PBs as Darts’ Floor Season Hots Up in Hildesheim
There were also several personal bests recorded in this season’s Players Championship events. Notably, Maik Kuivenhoven and Mensur Suljović both advanced to the semi-final stage, while for Rob Owen and Darius Labanauskas, their respective runs to the quarter-finals represent their deepest progress of the current campaign.
Finally, it would be remiss not to mention a moment of pure magic – a sublime nine-darter, delivered by Dirk van Duijvenbode in his opening-round victory over Madars Razma.

With no Euro Tour qualifiers on the schedule this time around, there remains just one more day of tungsten theatre in Hildesheim – and, if the opening act is anything to go by, there will be plenty more compelling stories to emerge from both ends of the draw.
