Dutch darting colossus Michael van Gerwen unleashed a vintage exhibition of tungsten supremacy, defeating compatriot Dirk van Duijvenbode in a thrilling, high-octane finale to claim his first Players Championship darts title in over eighteen months.
It feels scarcely believable that MVG had not captured one of these crowns since October 2024, yet in Leicester he emphatically reminded the darting world precisely why he remains one of the most formidable competitors ever to grace an oche.

The Green Machine commenced proceedings at the Mattioli Arena with a remarkably symmetrical 6-4 winning sequence. Across his opening four encounters, the three-time World Champion dispatched Dennie Olde Kalter, Adam Lipscombe, Ross Smith and then the only Dutchman currently ranked above him, Gian van Veen, all by identical scorelines.
Into the quarter-finals and Van Gerwen elevated proceedings another notch, dismantling Beau Greaves who was once again enjoying an exceptionally productive event.

Yet, impressive as those displays had been, what followed in the semi-finals bordered on the absurd.
When it is revealed that Martin Schindler averaged just shy of 109 and received only two opportunities at a double, the broader picture becomes abundantly clear. Van Gerwen was utterly mesmeric, detonating a scarcely believable 122.34 average to whitewash the German and leave Schindi wondering what cataclysmic force had just steamrolled across the stage.
Encouragingly for Aubergenius supporters, Van Duijvenbode appears to have finally emancipated himself from the injury tribulations which had so severely impeded his progress. Like Van Gerwen, Dirk also produced four ton-plus averages en route to the final.

Onto the all Dutch showdown, and it was MVG who exploded quickest from the blocks, surging into an early 4-1 advantage. Van Duijvenbode then abruptly located his rhythm and levelled proceedings before the pair exchanged further blows to leave the contest exquisitely poised at 5-5.
Then arrived the decisive juncture. Van Gerwen abruptly ignited the afterburners, producing an imperious eleven-dart hold to edge 6-5 ahead before replicating the feat immediately afterwards to break throw and seize complete control of the encounter. Minutes later, he completed the assignment to secure the 37th Players Championship crown of his illustrious career.

A brief acknowledgement too for Josh Rock and Ritchie Edhouse whose quarter-final appearances represented their strongest Players Championship performances of the season – pretty decent few days for Rocky. The same applies to Schindler’s semi-final berth while Stephen Bunting also narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
