There was no shortage of noteworthy darts performances during this afternoon’s Players Championship action, as the curtain descended on the latest double-header in Milton Keynes. Several competitors produced displays of considerable distinction, although two individuals in particular merit special commendation – players situated at entirely opposite ends of the experiential spectrum.
Foremost amongst them is Dave Chisnall, whose encouraging resurgence continued with another quarter-final appearance at Arena MK, following an equally commendable run to the last eight at the recent Baltic Sea Darts Open. The past few months have represented something of an arduous and occasionally frustrating period for the St Helens thrower, who by his own lofty standards has not consistently scaled the exalted heights that have become synonymous with his name.

Nevertheless, Chisnall’s achievements across a distinguished and remarkably enduring career remain beyond reproach. During well over a decade on the PDC Pro Tour, the man affectionately known as ‘Chizzy’ has accumulated an extraordinary eighteen Players Championship titles, supplemented by eight European Tour triumphs and a plethora of deep excursions at the sport’s most prestigious televised events.

Although numerous runner-up finishes have denied him further silverware, his longevity and sustained excellence have firmly established him amongst the most accomplished practitioners of the modern era.
Consequently, the veteran will derive considerable encouragement from his exploits not only on Thursday afternoon, but across the entirety of the last few days. Such performances provide a welcome source of optimism and suggest that his trajectory may once again be trending in an upward direction.

From one of the circuit’s most seasoned campaigners to one of its most embryonic talents, attention must also be directed towards the immensely promising Henry Coates.
It is an infrequent occurrence for a Challenge Tour call-up to advance to the latter stages of a Players Championship event, yet the nineteen-year-old Coates came agonisingly close to reaching the final, ultimately missing three darts which would have secured a showdown with William O’Connor for the title.
Remarkably, this represented only Coates’ fourth appearance on the Players Championship circuit. Even the youngster himself may have struggled to envisage such an impressive sequence of performances. Having exited at the board-final stage only twenty-four hours earlier, he advanced all the way to the semi-finals, eliminating a succession of illustrious opponents along the way, including former UK Open champions Andrew Gilding and Danny Noppert.

Should Coates continue to flourish on the Challenge Tour, further opportunities at senior level will inevitably materialise with increasing regularity. Possessing both precocious ability and an abundance of self-assurance, the young Englishman has now experienced the intoxicating allure of success and will undoubtedly harbour aspirations of many more memorable runs in the months and years ahead.
