Luke Humphries: Darts’ Finest Ambassador

Diamond Draws Competitions

Following a truly outstanding Premier League darts final – a breathtaking blend of extraordinary quality and unrelenting drama – World Champion Luke Littler edged past his compatriot and namesake, Luke Humphries, in a showdown destined to be remembered for generations.

The trophy may have ended up in Littler’s hands, but Humphries left the O2 Arena with his personal reputation further enhanced after producing one of the most gracious and insightful post-match interviews you are ever likely to hear from a defeated finalist.

Moments after falling agonisingly short in arguably the greatest Premier League final ever contested, Humphries displayed the sort of perspective that explains why he remains one of the most respected figures in professional darts. Having pushed Littler all the way to a deciding leg in a contest of astonishing quality, there were no excuses and no complaints.

Instead, there was admiration for the spectacle and appreciation for the standard both players had produced:

Speaking in his post-match interview, Cool Hand had this to say:

“Yeah, to be fair, I’m OK. It was a great game and I pushed him all the way there. I know, like I say in all my interviews, I do it all the time. I say, you know, there’s no one else in the world of darts that can push him like I can.” Given the evidence on display inside the O2 Arena, it was difficult to argue otherwise.

The decorated Berkshire-born man understood exactly how fine the margins had been. A deflection into the treble one at a crucial moment remained fresh in his mind, but even then, there was no sense of bitterness.

“You know, I had that opportunity to really kick on and I didn’t. But, you know, I think someone said he averaged 111, so you can’t complain.”

Those final words perfectly encapsulated the evening. Humphries averaged 105 himself, a figure that would comfortably win the overwhelming majority of matches. Unfortunately for him, he happened to be sharing a stage with a player producing one of the finest performances of his remarkable young career.

The reigning World Champion also revealed just how satisfying it had been to reach the final after an inconsistent start to the campaign.

“I think a lot of people didn’t expect me to be here and I managed to be here. And, you know, I’m just proud of myself. I managed to, you know, have the chance to, you know, retain my title, give it a shot. And boy, didn’t I give it a good shot. It was just not enough in the end.”

There was disappointment, naturally, but also immense pride in a performance that demonstrated precisely why Humphries continues to be Littler’s greatest rival.

Perhaps the most memorable moments arrived when discussion turned towards Littler’s emotional reaction following victory. Rather than dwell on his own heartbreak, Humphries focused on supporting his friend.

“I think darts need Luke Littler. Luke Littler don’t need darts. That’s the truth.” It was a striking assessment from a man who understands the pressures that accompany life at the summit of the sport. Humphries also dismissed suggestions that Littler is somehow immune to criticism and scrutiny.

“I think everyone thinks he’s a robot. He’s not. He is a normal person, a good kid as well.”

Ultimately, Humphries departed without the trophy, but his words revealed the character of a champion. Defeat may have denied him a second consecutive Premier League title, yet his class, humility and sportsmanship were evident throughout.
